Access leaders present a check to a scholarship recipient (2016)

$25,000 more provided to the ARMA International Educational Foundation

[NEWS] Livermore, CA, and Vonore, TN, June 14, 2017Access, founded with a vision to transform and elevate the records and information industry, has a clearly stated mission:  To lead the records and information management industry by providing its clients with the very best service.  The vision of the ARMA International Educational Foundation (the Foundation) is to be recognized as a leading resource for facilitating research and scholarship in records and information management.  Today, both organizations extended the successful Access Leadership Scholars Program, committing to another three years and $25,000.  Awards will be made in the Fall of 2017, 2018 and 2019.

In February 2013, the two organizations joined forces to provide new scholarship resources to enable in-service outstanding RIM practitioners to advance to positions of greater responsibility that require college degrees and to advance in their leadership roles in the industry itself.

The initial $25,000 fund was distributed over three years to six outstanding applicants who met the following requirements: currently employed as a records management professional for a minimum of one year, currently enrolled in an accredited college degree program, provide a current transcript showing a minimum grade of “B”, description of the courses being taken and relationship to a RIM career, one page discussion of how a college career will aid professional advancement, and two letters of reference.

Announcing the program’s extension, Access Chief Executive Officer Rob Alston said, “Access has long been committed to active participation in our local communities and in the broader community of RIM practitioners. We believe that this level of engagement is part of who we are and how we make a difference as a company and as Access team members. We are proud of our continuing sponsorship of the Access Leadership Scholars Program and the opportunities it is creating across the industry.”

Mike Smith, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Foundation stated that, “Three years of awards have demonstrated the success of the Access Leadership Scholars Program, with awards going to RIM practitioners working in six states across the U.S. and at companies/institutions including Phillips 66, Booz Allen Hamilton, Sealy & Co., Nova Southeastern University, and Houston Community College.  This program has enabled larger scholarships for our most promising applicants, making a real difference in the upward mobility for talented people held back by the lack of a degree.”

Awardees recounted being the first in their families to go to college; with one person stating, “As a non-traditional student I really didn’t think I had a chance at being selected as the beneficiary.”  Another wrote, “When I began educating myself, I felt I could finally see the real importance of information management for business users.”  The Foundation thanks Access for extending this program.
